Thursday's This and That Day Four
Our last full day at CIMI? Impossible. Again, it has been a great day. To be honest, there are no bad days at Toyon Bay. This morning all of our kids went snorkeling as scientists. They conducted our annual Fish Count. Working in partners, and spread throughout the bay, Eastshore students counted different species of fish. When we return to school, they will compare this year's data with previous year's and develop conjectures about why the amount of a particular species may be more or less abundant in Toyon Bay.
This afternoon's activities included hiking and labs. The hike up the side of the mountain is beautiful and offers a stunning view of the ocean and mainland. The fish lab and shark lab give the kids a chance to pet sharks and rays! This is always one of the highlights in students' eyes.
Performing songs and skits for one another will take place at tonight's bonfire. Our students will have a blast singing, dancing, telling jokes, and performing their skits.
Waking to beautiful blue skies again this morning, we noticed fog on your side of the Pacific. The temperature today remained above normal all day.
All three of us have noticed a lot of maturity growth in your children as our week on the island progressed. They've had to get themselves ready and arrive to program on time. They've had to manage personal belongings and money while maintaining the conditions of their dormitory rooms. We hope this level of independence continues once students return home.
Tomorrow, we will return to Newport Beach at 5:45 p.m. sharp. Students will disembark the Catalina Flyer by study group with their luggage in hand, so feel free to take them home once you are reunited with your child.
Please send log books and journals to school on Monday.
Look for more pictures to be posted over the weekend. Toyon Bay has dial up internet, and loading pictures is next to impossible on our blog.

Wonderful Wednesday Words - Day Three
Dear Families,
So far, it has been another spectacular day at CIMI! Our morning dive groups can boast about the fact that we probably saw a greater variety of fish in one dive than ever before. Please forgive us for bragging:
Double -headed Guitar Fish
Garibaldi
VERY large Kelp Bass
Sheep Crab(Large)
Lobster(Large)
Eels
Senorita
Opal Eye
Halfmoon
Thornback Ray
Halibut
And that was just the morning...
Right now everyone is excited about lunch and then it is on to another afternoon of hands-on learning. Half of the kids will participate in labs and the other will go snorkeling. The weather is
absoloutely beautiful and everyone is smiling.
The learning curve is an amazing thing to witness. The kids all know how to put their wetsuits on like pros and their dorm rooms are approaching livable conditions. We can actually see the floor!

Bison Sighting - Day Three
Today, the students were greeted in an unconventional way.
During their journal writing time, the students were greeted by a bison who walked directly through our campsite.
The students are extremely excited! They have a great day ahead of them. The weather is cloudless and sunny. We are expecting a snorkel temperature of 75 degrees, for the outside weather!
Mrs. Kadam and Officer Mendoza are on their way to the island! The students will dive in the morning and then have different labs in the afternoon! At night, the students will be able to enter a blow up, proportional whale to see all of its body to scale!
We will do our best to upload a picture of the bison right now!
Happy Wednesday!

Day Two
Wow. Full day.
The students have been adapting well to the CIMI schedule. The sun finally appeared today and it was warmer for the students during our kayak and rock wall extravaganzas. The students are currently sound asleep, eagerly anticipating tomorrow's full schedule.
85 of the students participated in the night dive this evening. The students had a once in a lifetime experience during this activity. They saw many different species at night than they did during the day. After the night dive, the students drank some hot chocolote and warmed up before bed with a nice, earned shower. The students who chose not to participate on the night dive went on a wildly informative Astronomy hike. It is clear that we have astronomy experts on our hands.
The students participated in a Kayak adventure today. The students experienced how tiring kayaking can be. They got to attempt different challenges on the kayaks. The students were out for about an hour on the kayaks and had a blast. For many students, this experience was brand-new for them.
The students also took risk taking to new heights with their rock climbing experience today. Many students surprised themselves with how well they did on the rock wall. It is a wonderful experience to see the students gain confidence and brighten up as they complete some of the challenging walls. All of the walls have great names, ask your child when they get home to talk to you about them!
We had a great lunch with a BBQ on the beach! The students got to have burgers and a salad, while looking out into the wonderful water. They also got to meet the one-legged seagull who inhabits camp.
One of the highlights for all the students today was seeing the bison up close. He stuck around camp for most of the day. The students were eagerly trying to get photos of the bison. They walked past the bison as it was enjoying an afternoon snack. Not to worry, they were at an elevated, safe distance.
This day has been extremely eventful and tiring for students and teachers alike! We will do our best to update tomorrow before the evening, but we are with the students until about 10:00 pm each night!
The students are all happy, healthy, and a little more tan than when we arrived!

Day One
Good Evening!
We have had an eventful, yet memorable day! The boat ride over was very eventful and windy. The students had a blast standing on the top deck, filling their ponchos up with air. The students had their introductory snorkel. Watching the students become familiar with their wetsuit pieces is always a humorous experience. Sea lions and Sheephead were some of the highlights seen on our first dive!
The students enjoyed a lovely italian dinner with some rice crispy treats for dessert. After dinner the students went to either their Marine mammal lab, or Creatures of the Night. The students will come home talking about "Long Division" and a maze filled with no light.
The kiddos are fast asleep, but ready for a BIG day tomorrow! They are all happy and healthy.
Pictures will come, but our internet is too slow for any uploads tonight.
It may not be until the weekend or next week we are able to post pictures.

Hello Families - Day One Arrival
Hello Families! We have had a wonderful day and all of the kids are tucked safely in bed. And now....in sequential order.... the boat ride was windy but lots of fun. One of our kids even said that he thought it was going to be his favorite part of CIMI. That was, of course, before we went on our first snorkel, which was fantastic! The water was beautiful and several kids reported seeing Gerabaldi, Top Smelt, a Sea Lion (under water), Opaleye and a few other, unidentified fish. Tonight offered two different classes- one was Creatures of the Night and the other, Marine Mammals. Both received very positive reviews. Tomorrow is a busy day filled with kayaking, rock wall climbing and our annual night dive. Will the kids be tired tomorrow night? We think so.
